Christmas comes but once a year...

posted Dec 25, 2010 1:28 PM by Benjamin Woo

Katey and I spent a beautiful Christmas period. For me, it was a busy time cooking and making fun new meals. Our home looks great, and we're looking forward to having some friends over for a "New Year's Party in the New Year" party on January 8th, 2011.

At midnight, Katey was so kind as to join me to attend midnight mass as our local Catholic Church. Mass was long! And Katey was such a trooper!!

Charlie came over around 11am on Christmas day. There were presents abound.

Katey especially liked the presents she bought for Charlie - all the games. We spent the morning making Shrinky Dinks! [photo to come, for now, just look at our Christmas photo album].

My favorite gift was from Katey, a chef's jacket. Charlie gave me a photo of himself; and I gave Katey a framed photo I took of her that was blown up to a 16" x 20", and beautifully framed.

I'm writing this blog entry from 27,000' in the air on our flight to Chicago, on our way to New Orleans.

New Photos!

Since Katey and I have been experimenting with cooking ... I have posted (and will continue to post) photos of our creations. The latest is our Beef Thai Satay. Although I admit, I will not try those again. Way too much work for what it's worth!

Speaking of cooking, I have posted a new cooking photo of Katey! To save time, here it is ...
(btw, She is "cooking" a Turkey sandwich for our road-trip to Saratoga. It was a very yummy turkey sandwich!

I've also created a Miscellaneous Charlie Photo album. These are photos that I really like of him.

Karaoke Night

What a night on Saturday night! After making a little dinner, Katey and I took a stroll and decided to check out the local Karaoke bar (Iggy's). We ended up staying for a few drinks and a song each. Ben belted out New York State of Mind, while Katey rocked the house with her rendition of Prince's Kiss.

Dinner for my mum's 60th birthday

OK, I don't like to boast about my cooking, but I think I outdid myself on this occasion.

The menu:
  • Frisée salad
  • Thai Shrimp Curry
  • Chocolate Soufflé
The result:

OK, Charlie didn't eat the frisée!! And the soufflé was a little overcooked (but it didn't flop!)
And we had a little Prosecco to boot!

The big question is, how do I outdo myself for Katey's birthday?????

An Afternoon at the Polo

Saratoga Springs, NY

On Sunday, July 25, 2010, Katey and I drove about 180 miles due north of New York City, in our rented Zipcar to watch a game of polo!

Zipcar is a car-sharing service, and each car has a name. Our car was named "Steppig".
Neither of us had watched polo before. I have to say, it was all very exciting. Four players per side, playing six "chukkers" (which is a period of play in polo). Each chukker being 7 1/2 minutes.

Although both sides were local sides, Katey decided to cheer for a team named "Shamrock". (Probably because green is her favorite color). In the end, Shamrock won 10-5.

Watching horse and man at full gallop and then striking a ball that's about the size of a baseball or cricket ball was amazing. Often the ball struck a horse (which made the horses a little upset!)

As usual, I took copious amounts of photographs. So, if you really want to see 200+ photos of men on horses, enjoy! The full gallery is here. But here is one or two for those of you less adventurous, here are just one or two ...

We were also lucky to meet up with a local family who had also come out to watch the polo!

After the 3rd chukker (i.e. half time), the traditional "stomping of the divots" took place. Here, Katey demonstrates pre-stomp, stomping and post-stomp...

Of course, no polo match could be complete without the ceremonial "sabrage" or the opening of champagne with a sabre:

In case, you're looking for the cork, yes, indeed, it is the blur just at the top left corner of the Saratoga Polo Association (SPA) logo.

What you're left with is access to two bottles of champagne (with less than clean cuts).

The evening ended around 8:30pm, and we rode drove off into the sunset ...
